Fully Integrate Multiple Region Boxarts

📋 Summary

Expand LaunchBox’s media handling to allow downloading, storing, and displaying multiple region-specific boxarts per game (e.g., US, EU, JP). Users could then select which region’s artwork is displayed globally, per-platform, or even per-game—without overwriting or breaking other entries.

❗ Problem

Currently, LaunchBox is designed to display only a single piece of boxart per game. When downloading media, LaunchBox pulls the artwork that matches the ROM’s region (or based on region priorities set in Options). This creates several issues:

  • Users who want to see multiple regional boxarts (US, EU, JP) cannot download them all without workarounds.

  • Manually renaming files to match regions is cumbersome and error-prone, and sometimes results in mismatched covers being displayed.

Many collectors care deeply about regional differences in boxart—sometimes even preferring alternate artwork from a different region than their ROM. LaunchBox’s current system doesn’t accommodate this.

💡 Proposal

  1. Download Multiple Regions at Once

    • Allow users to select which regions’ boxarts they want to download (US, EU, JP, etc.).

    • If available in the Games Database, LaunchBox would fetch all selected regional boxarts automatically.

  2. Flexible Display Options

    • Add a new submenu in the Image View dropdown to control which boxart is displayed:

      • ROM Region – artwork that matches the ROM’s detected region.

      • Global Override – show all games with US, EU, or JP art regardless of ROM region.

  3. Optional Enhancements

    • Per-platform settings to prioritize one region over another (e.g., always show EU art for PlayStation, JP art for Super Famicom).

    • Quick toggle in the right-click context menu or game details pane for switching boxarts.

🧩 Benefits

  • Gives collectors the ability to showcase regional differences in their libraries.

  • Prevents unwanted overwrites when downloading additional regional art.

  • Provides greater customization of how collections look in both LaunchBox and Big Box.

  • Reduces manual renaming and file management workarounds.

  • Improves the overall presentation for users who enjoy exploring boxart history and design differences across regions.
