Ability to Specify a default image amongst multiple images of the same Image Type

📋Summary

Enable users to assign extra metadata to media files (e.g., source, style, resolution) and select a preferred image to display for each media type per platform—without needing to delete or replace other files. This would improve media organization, consistency, and visual presentation across collections.

❗Problem

When multiple images exist in a category (e.g., multiple box fronts), LaunchBox currently cycles through them randomly. There’s no way to define which one should be prioritized or displayed by default. This can result in a visually inconsistent experience—especially when image packs differ in style, resolution, viewing angle, or source (e.g., paper box vs. CD-style, or JP vs. US region artwork).

Additionally, LaunchBox doesn’t currently store metadata about where an image came from (e.g., EmuMovies, community pack, LaunchBox DB), which limits the ability to sort, filter, or manage artwork more granularly.

💡Proposal

  1. Allow users to tag images with metadata such as:

    • Source (e.g., EmuMovies, LaunchBox DB, user-imported, pack name)

    • Region (e.g., JP, NA, EU)

    • Type (e.g., scanned, 3D render, stylized)

    • Resolution or aspect ratio

  2. Add the ability to set a default image to display for each image group (e.g., “Always show this 3D Box for SNES games”), with fallback logic when the preferred image is missing.

  3. Optionally allow per-platform display rules, so users can prioritize certain image types (e.g., CD-style boxes for MSU-1 titles, or real scans for NES games).

✅Benefits

  • Improves visual consistency across platforms and libraries

  • Allows collectors to curate preferred media styles while retaining alternative options

  • Makes it easier to manage large media libraries with packs from multiple sources

  • Enhances frontend presentation by standardizing artwork display

  • Opens the door to future features like filtering media by source, region, or type 🧼🗂️
