Version 13.21 of LaunchBox introduced an innovative Media Pack feature aimed at enhancing user accessibility, flexibility, and creativity. Here's everything you need to know about this powerful addition:

Accessing Media Packs

Users can manage available Media Packs in LaunchBox through the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the menu bar.

  2. Select Tools > Manage > LaunchBox Themes and Media... This will provide access to a list of available Media Packs for seamless management.

Key Media Packs

The 13.21 update includes the following Media Packs:

  • Platform Clear Logos

  • Platform Icons

  • Badges

  • Controller Inputs (newly introduced in 13.21)

Controller Inputs are currently exclusive to Big Box, displayed in the default Big Box theme's bottom-right corner. This section dynamically reflects user-mapped controller buttons for actions like Select, Back, Search, and entering Game Details, based on Options > Controller Mappings.

Non-Destructive Pack Management

  • Flexibility: Users can install multiple Media Packs simultaneously and switch between them effortlessly.

  • Independent Application: Packs can be applied independently to LaunchBox and Big Box.

  • Fallback Option: If a selected Media Pack lacks specific content for a Platform, Category, or Playlist, LaunchBox will default to its corresponding Nostalgia Media Pack as a fallback, ensuring completeness.

Platform Clear Logos

While this feature remains accessible to free users, additional image packs are reserved for premium members. Free users can still:

  1. Apply Platform Clear Logo images manually when editing a Platform, Category, or Playlist.

  2. Locate the Nostalgia pack files under LaunchBox\Images\Media Packs\Platform Clear Logos\Nostalgic Platform Clear Logos, make changes, and see them reflected in LaunchBox.

Premium users enjoy access to a management window for seamless pack integration.

Users can override Clear Logo images via the interface:

  • Right-click a Platform, Category, or Playlist.

  • Add an image to the right-hand image pane.

  • Set the image type to Clear Logo (Override). This overridden image will take precedence over all other applied packs.

Custom and Developer-Defined Packs

  • User-Created Packs: Users can manually create a Media Pack by:

    1. Navigating to LaunchBox\Images\Media Packs.

    2. Copying an existing pack as a base.

    3. Renaming the folder to represent the new pack's name in LaunchBox.

    4. Making desired file changes within the new folder. The custom pack will automatically appear in the LaunchBox Themes & Media window.

Theme Developer Packs: Custom themes may include Media Packs specified by developers to ensure a particular style, bypassing user preferences.

Content Creators and Community Contributions

Content creators can share their Media Packs with others, fostering a collaborative and dynamic ecosystem. Users can:

At launch, notable Media Packs include:

  1. Platform Clear Logo Packs: Black, white, and colored options by Dan Patrick, renowned for their accuracy and years of meticulous effort.

  2. Badge Media Packs: White-filled and white-outline packs by the LaunchBox team.

  3. Controller Input Packs: White sets for Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Pro controllers, crafted by the LaunchBox team.

Legacy Image Locations Deprecated in 13.21

As of LaunchBox/Big Box version 13.21, certain legacy image directories are no longer used. These assets have been fully migrated to the Media Pack feature.

If you upgraded from a version prior to 13.21, you may still have image files stored in the legacy locations listed below. These files are no longer used by LaunchBox or Big Box but remain for downgrade compatibility. During the update, any images from these legacy folders were migrated into Legacy Conversion Packs, which now serve as the default media packs post-update. This ensures consistency, so the same images you used before the update continue to be used afterward. If you don’t plan to revert to an older version, it’s safe to delete the images from the locations listed below.
