Badges are a powerful visual tool in LaunchBox and Big Box, providing users with important information at a glance through logo-based icons. Whether indicating if a game is installed, has achievements, is completed, uses a specific controller, or was purchased from a particular storefront (Steam, Epic, GOG, etc.), badges bring clarity and convenience to the user experience.

This guide is designed for content creators who want to customize or create their own Badge Media Packs. These packs are versatile, as they work seamlessly in both LaunchBox (LB) and Big Box (BB).

Where to Find Existing Badge Media Packs

To get started, browse the existing Badge Media Packs to understand what badges are available:

  • Look in the folder: LaunchBox\Images\Media Packs\Badges\.

  • Use packs like the Nostalgia badge pack or those by Unbrokensoftware as inspiration. These examples can serve as a base for creating your own pack (make sure to use a separate folder for your custom creations).

How to Create Your Custom Badge Pack

Creating a custom Badge Media Pack begins by using an existing pack as a foundation. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Duplicate an Existing Pack

  • Browse the existing packs in LaunchBox\Images\Media Packs\Badges\ (e.g., the Nostalgia badge pack or one by Unbrokensoftware).

  • Create a copy of the folder for the pack you'd like to use as a base.

Step 2: Rename Your Folder

  • Name the copied folder after your new badge pack. This name will appear in both LaunchBox and Big Box when users select it.

Step 3: Remove the "Version" File

  • If the folder contains a file named Version, delete it. This ensures your pack is treated as unique and fresh.

Step 4: Replace the Images

  • Replace all existing badge images within the folder with your own designs. Use clear, recognizable logos for your badges to make them visually distinct and purposeful.

Testing Your Badge Pack

Once your badge pack is ready, test it in both LaunchBox and Big Box to ensure it works correctly:

In LaunchBox:

  1. Navigate to Tools > Manage > Theme and Media Manager.

  2. Find your badge pack and click Apply to both LaunchBox and Big Box.

Verify that all badges display correctly and appear where they are meant to within the user interface.

Publishing Your Badge Pack

After testing your pack and confirming that all badges are functional:

  1. Upload to Forums:

    • Share your badge pack on the forums under the appropriate section for feedback.

  2. Upload to the LaunchBox Media Website:

    • Go to LaunchBox Media Uploads and submit your pack.

    • You must be logged into the forums, as your username will be used to credit you as the author.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Use a version number format like 1.0 or 1.01 (avoid 1.0.1).

  • Include screenshots of your badges, similar to those in existing packs.

  • Ensure all information is filled out during submission to avoid rejection.

Once submitted, the LaunchBox team will review your pack and either approve it or provide feedback for revisions.
